In the heavens, there is a palace, and in that palace stands three thrones. One of onyx, one of ivory, and one of gold. To many of the races of Temir, this is seen as the home of the gods, where they set down decrees for mortals. The relationship of the gods of the three thrones and their affiliate deities is a subject of great debate, with each race having its own perspective on just how it all fits together. This article details a few of the common traits of each deity, as well as the rule information regarding them.
Alignment: Lawful Neutral
Domains: Law, Commerce, Water, Truth, City, Balance, Destiny
Favoured Weapon: Quarterstaff
Lord of the Ivory Throne, Arman is naturally the central figure in the faith of the Ivory Throne. They hold him up as the lawgiver who brings order to the universe, because he, of all the gods, stands alone. However, this is not universally the case. To the Ashkel, he’s practically a non-entity, as they focus on the tension between good and evil as the centre of their faith. To the goblin tribes of eastern Temir, Arman is a servant god, trapped in the web of Erzulie, the consort of Nurzhan, and to the dwarves of Scything Crag, Arman is known as the Thane of Thanes, whose clan is the people themselves. Common depictions of him show him as an old, bearded man, with a staff laid across his legs.
Alignment: Lawful Good
Domains: Law, Good, Earth, Fire, Sun, War, Courage
Favoured Weapon: Longsword
Serik is the lord of the Golden Throne, a god of might, heroes, and honour. He is most venerated by the Ashkel, who see him as the brother of Nurzhan, constantly locked in a duel for primacy. The Ivory Throne has an order of templars dedicated to Serik, the Dawnstar Legionnaires. He is also revered by many paladin orders, and to the paladins of the north and the paladins of the east, Serik is actually depicted as a woman, rather than a man. Many things are common in depictions of Serik though, such as armor and the presence of his sword, known as Force of Will, reputedly so sharp it can slice time itself.
Alignment: Lawful Evil
Domains: Law, Evil, Earth, Air, Tyrant, War, Envy
Favoured Weapon: Flail
Often depicted as a cold warrior or a devil, Nurzhan is a conqueror and tyrant, eternal and unflinching. He stands at the head of the pantheon in the goblin dogma, gifts and sacrifices offered out of fear of his wrath. He also stands highest among the gnolls of Scything Crag, who revere him as the conqueror which they themselves would like to be. Many give Nurzhan a place at their shrines out of fear of what he may do when slighted, and the Chaga, stone giants, believe that their warriors go to his right hand when they die, to join his ever-growing army.
Alignment: Neutral Good
Domains: Good, Water, Earth, Healing, Community
Favoured Weapon: Sickle
Symbols: White carnation, clear pool of water, sheaf of wheat
Revered as the gentle touch, Almaz is sometimes depicted as the daughter of Serik. To the Ashkel she is the result of his seduction by Erzulie, while to the paladins of the north, Serik is her mother, and her father is Tural, the snake in the grass. Among the Ivory Throne, she is seen as the daughter of Serik and Keres, while the gnomes of Temir claim that she issued forth from Keres’ virgin loins. Regardless of her origin, Almaz is a goddess of healing and unity, often revered by people of the hearth. The Farmer’s League in Therengrad, while it reveres the Ivory Throne, also maintains the region’s largest shrine to Almaz.
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Domains: Chaos, Good, Air, Earth, Protection, Travel, Nobility
Favoured Weapon: Halberd
Symbols: The Standing Stone, the silver sail
Guardian of the Road, Gulnur is often depicted as a weary warrior leaning upon his halberd. Small shrines to him can be found at many crossroads, and he is featured prominently in the dogmas of the Ashkel and the orcs as the god who protects them on their travels. The Rilador maintain many shrines to him, making offerings as a new season of piracy begins, and giving thanks upon their safe return. Oddly enough, the Tachros Navy and the pirate hunters led by the Majestic Eagle also revere Gulnur, making many of the same offerings.
Alignment: Neutral Good
Domains: Good, Air, Fire, Joy, Dream, Luck, Family
Favoured Weapon: Spear
Seen as a goddess of beginnings and joyful occasions, Keres is esteemed by many of the hunting races of the region, most notably the goblins and the shoal halflings. Within the faith of the Ivory Throne, she is depicted as the wife of Serik and mother of Almaz, a nurturing figure, rather than a joyful huntress.
Alignment: Neutral Evil
Domains: Evil, Fire, Air, Temptation, Necromancy, Oracle, Luck
Favoured Weapon: Scimitar
Often seen as the mistress or consort of Nurzhan, Erzulie is depicted as a temptress and sorceress, luring those unlucky enough to catch her eye to an unspeakable fate. She is also the mistress of the undead, and the stories say she was revered by the necromancers of old. To find a shrine to Erzulie in someone’s home now is grounds for arrest in the cities by the sea, though some families take the risk in order to gain her favour.
Alignment: Chaotic Evil
Domains: Chaos, Evil, Fire, Earth, Destruction, Hunger, Diabolic
Favoured Weapon: Heavy Flail
Depicted as a raging beast or berserker, Anargul is incarnate blood lust and hunger. Often shown as a cannibal, some say he is the heir of Nurzhan, to be unleashed on the world once it is conquered, but others show him as the product of a dalliance between Tural and Keres, whose birth left her with no evil in her. The Shatterskull Ogres revere Anargul for his strength and power, as do the dwarves, for his perseverance.
Alignment: Neutral Evil
Domains: Evil, Earth, Water, Trickery, Shadow, Death, Planning
Favoured Weapon: Dagger
The Shadow Count, Tural is a god of deception and betrayal. The orcs tell tales of how he sired Almaz on keres while disguised as Serik, while the Ashkel see him as the half-brother of Gulnur, who turned to Nurzhan after his own family cast him out. He is a god of subtlety and illusion, and revered by the Imaskari as well as, if the rumour can be believed, the Tanril Agezar.
