Fletcher got his start in sailing when he left his family as a very young man to pursue adventure with a no-account uncle, working aboard Duncan's Dinghy, under James Duncan. He met and befriended L A Smee, who was also on the crew.

He eventually became captain of the Ariadne. He scored big and immediately retired to Volos, selling the Ariadne to a new aspiring captain.

He settled in Volos with two adopted kids, and eventually got bored of being a man of leisure and took up a trade. He became a goldsmith in a shared smithy with a Tortle blacksmith who goes by Shells. Swain was labourer and errand runner for the smithy, and was inspired by Fletcher to take to the sea.

His kids now grown, when Agatha contracted him to sail with the Unsinkable II, he accepted and became the ship's captain.
